JennAir JGC8430CDB Gas Downdraft Cooktop with Sealed Burners

The JGC8430CDB is a 30-inch gas downdraft cooktop with sealed burners. It is the gas model next to the electric JED8430, using a similar downdraft vent, and it is built into counters where an overhead hood is not an option.
Sealed burners keep spills off the base, but the ports and igniter still collect residue. When that happens, the flame comes in orange or in patches, and one burner clicks through several attempts before catching. A burner that will not hold a low setting, on the other hand, usually comes down to the valve.
The vent is a separate job. If steam hangs in the kitchen or the blower sounds strained, we look at the filter, the duct path and the motor. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. We quote the work in writing first, and each repair has a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Spills stay out of the base, but the ports and igniter still need cleaning. We clean them during service, test the spark and flame, and note anything worn.
That is normal during ignition, because the spark circuit serves several burners. If one burner keeps clicking after the others light, it has a clogged port or a weak igniter, which we test.
A lifting flame can come from too much gas pressure, a misaligned burner cap or clogged ports. We check the cap seating and the ports first, then the supply, and explain our findings.
