What C81 or C83 means

On JennAir electric radiant and touch-control cooktops such as the JED3430GS, C81 or C83 means the surface cooking area has overheated and the automatic protection has stepped in. The control wants every surface control turned off and airflow under the cooktop restored. You will see the code on the display, and the element will not keep heating until the glass has cooled and nothing blocks the cabinet space below.

Common causes of C81 or C83

  • Airflow to the underside of the cooktop is restricted by items stored in the cabinet below
  • An oven below the cooktop is running and adding heat to the cabinet
  • Heat has built up in the cooktop after long use at high settings
  • A temperature protection circuit in the cooktop control that trips too early
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn every surface control to OFF. 2. If the cooktop sits above a cabinet, open the doors and pull out any pans, trays or boxes touching the underside. 3. If an oven is running below, switch it off. 4. Let the glass cool for about 30 minutes before trying again. 5. If the code returns right away on a cool cooktop, stop using it and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • The code is protecting the glass and the electronics from heat, and restarting it over and over can shorten their life.
  • If a cabinet is stuffed with items, the real fix is airflow, and a technician cannot change that by replacing parts.
  • Opening the cooktop to look at the control means working around line voltage that stays live at the terminals.
  • A repeat overheat on a cool, clear cooktop points to a sensor or control that needs a measured test, not a guess.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

C81 or C83C81 or C83 questions
Is it safe to cook while C81 is showing?

No. The cooktop has overheated, so the control is limiting it for protection. Turn everything off, clear the space below and let it cool before you try again.

Why would a cabinet under the cooktop cause this?

The cooktop needs air moving under the glass to shed heat. Stored items or a running oven trap that heat, and the control reads it as an overheated surface cooking area.

C81 keeps coming back on a cold cooktop. What next?

Then airflow is probably not the cause. Call us and we will check the temperature protection and the control, and you get a written price before any work starts.
