What F40 means

F40 on JennAir electric radiant and touch-control cooktops indicates there may be a problem with the user interface (touchpad), the cooktop power control board, or the wiring between them. The touchpad and power board work as a pair, and when their conversation fails, the cooktop may ignore your touches or show F40 and refuse to heat. Cookware and cleaning will not change this code.

Common causes of F40

  • The touchpad (user interface) is failing
  • The cooktop power control board has failed
  • Wiring between the touchpad and the power board is damaged or loose
  • A power surge that damaged either board
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn off all controls and clean the glass so nothing is on the touch area. 2. Switch the cooktop's breaker off for one minute, then back on. 3. Test a single element on a low setting. 4. If F40 comes back, leave the cooktop off. 5. Call us and give the model number.

! Why to stop there
  • The power control board handles high current under the glass.
  • Telling a bad touchpad from a bad power board needs testing with power connected.
  • Ordering both boards to be safe adds a large, unnecessary cost.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

F40F40 questions
What parts does F40 involve?

The touchpad, the cooktop power control board and the wiring between them. The code does not say which one, so a technician tests each one before recommending a part.

Can I replace the touchpad myself?

We do not suggest it. The touchpad connects to a power board and live wiring, and buying the wrong part is common when the cause is not known.

What does your visit cost?

You get a written price before any work starts. We test first, explain the result in plain words and back the repair with a 30-day workmanship warranty.
