JennAir Downdraft Vent Smells Like Grease or Smoke When Turned On

A greasy, burnt or musty smell from a downdraft vent usually points to buildup in the filter, duct or blower. Here is where to look and when to switch it off.

Downdraft ventilation pulls smoke and steam down and out of the kitchen. Because it sits at cooking level and works with grease-laden air, it collects residue over time. When the vent starts to smell, that residue is often the reason.

Where Odors Come From

  • Dirty grease filters: old grease warms up and gives off a stale or burnt smell.
  • Residue in the duct: grease coats the pipe and the blower.
  • Moisture: in Houston humidity, damp air in the duct can cause a musty smell.
  • Outdoor air coming back in: a damper that does not close well can let in odors and heat.

What You Can Do

  1. Turn off the vent and the cooktop and let everything cool.
  2. Remove the filters following your manual and soak them in hot water with dish soap.
  3. Rinse, dry completely and set them back in place.
  4. Wipe the opening and the surrounding surface with a degreasing cleaner.

Warning Signs

Stop using the downdraft and have it checked if you see smoke, notice an electrical or burning-plastic odor, or hear the blower scraping. Thick grease in the duct is a fire hazard, and a hot motor that is straining can make things worse.

Do not spray cleaners into the duct or the blower area. Liquid can reach wiring and the motor.

Our technicians can inspect the blower, damper and duct access and tell you what needs cleaning or repair. Should the problem persist after these simple checks, our cooktop repair service is ready for JennAir owners across the region, and the neighborhoods we reach are listed on our service area page. A quote for the downdraft vent arrives in writing before we begin, and the finished job carries our 30-day workmanship warranty.
