E21 appears on JennAir over-the-range microwave hoods, including the JMV9196CS and the JMV8000 series. The control board sees the thermal sensor circuit as open, as if the sensor wire were cut or unplugged. The official guidance names the thermal sensor, the appliance control board and the wiring between them. Owners see E21 and the microwave stops heating or will not start a cycle.
1. Press Stop/Cancel and open the door for a few minutes so the cavity cools. 2. Make sure the vent slots on the front and top are free of grease and the unit is not boxed in. 3. Close the door and try a short 30-second run with a cup of water inside. 4. If E21 returns right away, stop using the microwave and book a visit.
The control expects a steady reading from the sensor and instead finds no connection at all. It is similar to a thermometer with a snapped lead. The microwave then refuses to heat rather than guess the cavity temperature.
It can if a connector was only slightly loose, but then it usually returns during the next heavy use. A code that clears for a day and comes back still needs the sensor circuit checked.
They point at the same sensor but report opposite conditions. E21 reports the circuit open, while E22 reports it shorted. We read the actual sensor values to see which one we are dealing with.
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
