What E22 means

On JennAir over-the-range microwave hoods like the JMV9196CS and JMV8000 series, E22 reports that the thermal sensor circuit has a short to the control board. The thermal sensor, the appliance control board or the wiring in between may be to blame. Owners see E22, and the microwave may stop heating or refuse heated modes. E21 is the same sensor reported open.

Common causes of E22

  • Thermal sensor has failed shorted
  • Wire insulation is damaged and touching metal
  • Appliance control board is misreading the sensor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Press Stop/Cancel, open the door and let the cavity cool. 2. Check the vent openings for grease. 3. Close the door and run a short test with water. 4. Let the breaker stay off for about a minute, then turn it on. 5. If E22 returns, call us.

! Why to stop there
  • A short can be in the sensor, the wire or the board, and each needs a different fix.
  • Damaged wire insulation near a hot cavity can be a hazard.
  • Finding it means opening the housing.
  • We give a written price first and a 30-day warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E22E22 questions
What does a shorted sensor circuit mean?

The sensor line is connected where it should not be, so the control sees an impossible reading. It is like a thermometer wire touching metal.

Is E22 more urgent than E21?

Both stop heating, so treat them alike. A short may also point to damaged wire insulation, so we do not suggest running the unit again and again before it is looked at.

Could E22 clear on its own?

If a wire only touched metal for a moment, yes, but it may return. Repeat appearances need a full check of the sensor, the wiring and the board input.
